Pharmaceutical Chemistry integrates organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry and biochemistry to study the discovery, design, synthesis, identification and development of therapeutic compounds. It explains how chemical structure influences the physical properties, stability and biological action of a drug.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Krishna Institute of Pharmacy develops a clear understanding of drug molecules through synthesis, purification, characterization and structure-activity relationships. Students gain practical experience in handling chemicals, performing reactions and evaluating pharmaceutical substances according to established quality standards.

Aim of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

  • To study the chemical classification, name and structure of drugs.
  • To understand the pharmacological uses, doses, stability and storage conditions of drugs.
  • To learn the different dosage forms available and their brand names.
  • To perform impurity testing and basic quality control tests.

Main Areas of Discussion at Pharmaceutical Chemistry

  • Describe the chemical class, structure and chemical name of the commonly used drugs and pharmaceuticals of both organic and inorganic nature.
  • Discuss the pharmacological uses, dosage regimen, stability issues and storage conditions of chemical substances commonly used as drugs.
  • Describe the quantitative and qualitative analysis, impurity testing of the chemical substances given in the official monographs.
  • Identify the dosage form & the brand names of the drugs and pharmaceuticals popular in the marketplace.

The Pharmaceutical Chemistry laboratories support synthesis, purification and preliminary characterization of organic and inorganic pharmaceutical compounds. They are equipped with safe work benches, water and gas connections, ventilation, heating facilities and apparatus required for reactions, separation, crystallization and physicochemical testing.
